Collection: Jean-Louis Chave

In the Northern Rhône, the Chave family is considered winemaking royalty. The family boasts a continuous lineage of winemakers who have tilled the granitic soils of Hermitage hill dating back to 1481. The current 16th-generation vigneron is Jean-Louis Chave, whose cerebral, confident, yet understated style has “propelled Chave wines to status among the world’s most sought-after collectibles,” writes Wine Spectator. Grounded in rich terroir, immune to trends and fashion, these are Rhônes of timeless beauty.

Chave’s legendary pedigree and the family’s ancient land holdings enable Jean-Louis to take a singular approach to crafting his Hermitage Rouge, the estate’s flagship wine. The estate does not release single-vineyard Hermitages—instead, Jean-Louis masterfully blends components from parcels located in the appellation’s greatest sites (such as Bessards, Peleat, and l’Ermite), achieving a level of balance and poise that makes these some of the most age-worthy in France.

In recent years, Jean-Louis has invested considerable resources in reconstructing historic terraced vineyards across the river in Saint-Joseph. The Saint-Josephs are more accessible and ready-to-drink while the Hermitage wines evoke the grandeur of haute-couture.

Sotheby’s Wine is thrilled to present a wide selection of Chave’s top wines including the renowned Hermitage Rouge and Saint-Josephs, as well as vintages of Hermitage Blanc and several wines from the estate’s negociant line, J.L. Chave Selection, which today rank among the best values in the Rhône.
