What makes the wines of the Giacomo Conterno estate some of the most brilliant in all of Italy? The terroir certainly plays a defining role. Roberto Conterno owns exceptional vineyards – Francia, Cerretta, and Arione – in the great Barolo village of Serralunga d'Alba, long regarded as the source of the region’s most structured and powerful wines. Yet while great terroir is essential, the defining factor lies in the estate’s exacting work in both vineyard and cellar, where an uncompromising attention to detail shapes wines of remarkable precision and authority. The result is wines that continue to redefine expectations of Barolo.
A common misconception is that Conterno’s wines are traditional in the sense of being old-fashioned. While the Barolo wines do benefit from extended bottle age to fully reveal their complexity, exemplified by the depth and composure of the 2011 Cerretta, their defining qualities are present from the outset. Shimmering fruit, layered textures and finely tuned aromatics are already evident in vintages such as 2018, while the 2019 and 2021 releases show the same precision and structural clarity in a more youthful register. The same philosophy is expressed in the Barbera from the Cerretta vineyard, a benchmark interpretation of the variety. Together, these wines offer a compelling view of the estate’s range as it stands today.
