Collection: The Master of Monforte: Conterno

What makes the wines of the Giacomo Conterno estate some of the most brilliant in all of Italy? The terroir certainly helps. Roberto Conterno owns wonderful vineyards (Francia, Cerretta and Arione) in the great Barolo village of Serralunga d'Alba, home to the richest and most powerful Barolo wines. But while good terroir is necessary, it is never sufficient by itself. The answer, I believe, lies in Roberto's obsessive work in the vineyard and the winery; his fastidious approach to even the smallest details. The result is wines that can reset your conceptions of Barolo.

One common misunderstanding of the Conterno wines is that they are traditional in the sense of old-fashioned. Yes, to show their best the Barolo wines do benefit from 10+ years of bottle age. But the real magic is the shimmering quality of the fruit and the wonderful textures and fragrances. These are present from the beginning of the wines' lives. The same applies to the glorious Barbera from the (Cascina) Francia vineyard; a celebrated expression of the variety. I take every chance I get to experience these monumental wines; I suggest you do likewise from our broad range.
