Castello di Ama is one of Chianti Classico's most stunning estates. It comprises its own small, hilltop village, and is well known for its remarkable art collection. If you're ever in the area, it is a great visit.
As for the wines, well, these are some of the high points of the region, made in a polished but classic style, rich and aromatic. There are, however, a large number of labels that require some experience to know. Here's the breakdown:
- 'Ama' Chianti Classico - the main wine of the estate, made from 100% Sangiovese, a classic, everyday Chianti Classico
- San Lorenzo - a good value Gran Selezione Chianti Classico, made from a blend of four vineyards
- Bellavista and Casuccia - the best Chianti wines of the estate; two single vineyard wines which will improve for over 10 years
- Apparita - a Merlot 'Super Tuscan', from the top part of the Bellavista vineyard
- Haiku - 50% Sangiovese, the rest Merlot and Cabernet Franc, from a single vineyard
- Al Poggio - a rich but fresh Chardonnay from estate vineyards
Ama offers something for everyone and succeeds with all of them. For Tuscany lovers, Ama is an essential estate.
