Earth Day: A Selection of Organic and Biodynamic Wines

Every year on April 22nd, people around the world come together to celebrate Earth Day, a momentous occasion dedicated to raising awareness about environmental issues and promoting sustainable actions. Since its inception in 1970, Earth Day has grown into a global movement uniting individuals, communities, governments, and organizations in a collective effort to protect our planet and preserve its natural beauty for future generations.

Many of the world's great wines, like Château Latour or Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, are made from grapes farmed organically or biodynamically. Choosing to farm these ways shows a commitment to the long-term health of the vineyard and to not cutting corners, which almost always applies to the entire philosophy of the business. The vineyard is treated as a living entity with organic or biodynamic farming, whose overall health matters. It means more time spent in the vineyard working preventively rather than reactively. Many wineries choose to be certified by bodies such as CCOF (California Certified Organic Farmers) or Demeter which is biodynamic certification, while some practice organic or biodynamic farming without being certified as the process is grueling and costly.

In honor of Earth Day, Sotheby’s Wine is proud to showcase a selection of wines made organically and/or biodynamically, which happen to be some of our favorites not just on Earth Day, but year-round.
