What’s increasingly clear, however, is that the second wines of these noble houses have become stunning in their own right – exemplars of each house’s haute style offered at far more accessible prices.

The production of second wines, which dates back to the 1800s, has evolved over the decades. While they’re typically crafted from younger wines or sites with less ideal exposure, these cuvées have enjoyed huge leaps in quality thanks to soil studies and new vinification techniques.
