Few estates embody the soul and history of traditional Barolo like Bartolo Mascarello. Founded in 1918 in the village of Barolo, the domaine became legendary under Bartolo Mascarello, one of the region’s most uncompromising traditionalists and a fierce defender of classic Barolo during the rise of modernist winemaking in the 1980s and 1990s. Today, the estate is guided by his daughter Maria Teresa Mascarello, who continues the family’s philosophy with extraordinary precision and consistency.
Unlike many producers who bottle single vineyards separately, Bartolo Mascarello has always believed that the greatness of Barolo comes from blending complementary terroirs. The estate’s Barolo is produced from approximately 5 hectares across four historic crus: Cannubi, San Lorenzo and Rué in the commune of Barolo, along with Rocche dell’Annunziata in La Morra. The wine produced from these vineyards has a remarkable balance, perfume, finesse, with exceptional transparency and aging potential. Fermentations remain entirely traditional with long macerations and aging in large neutral Slavonian oak botti.
Antonio Galloni for Vinous has described the estate as “a bastion of traditional, artisan values in Piedmont,” while noting that Maria Teresa Mascarello has taken the wines “to the very pinnacle of excellence.” He also wrote that the wines possess “more refined aromatics and elegance across the range,” further cementing Bartolo Mascarello as one of the benchmark producers of Barolo.
