Antoine Jobard's 2022 and Back Vintage Cuvées

Walden Pemantle |

Antoine Jobard took charge of his father's domaine in 2005 and has since built a serious case as one of the great winemakers of Meursault. Jobard's wines cut a strikingly similar profile to other giants of Meursault: they are searingly reductive in youth, but consistently blossom into expansively textured, complete wines over the course of five or more years.

While Jobard’s minimal intervention and slow barrel fermentations contribute to his wines’ excellence, his biggest strength lies in his impressive range of Premier Cru holdings. This 2022 release features wines from five Premier Crus across Meursault and Saint-Aubin.

Blagny sits about 100 meters higher than Meursault’s mid-slope Premier Crus, giving a leaner, slightly earlier-drinking expression that ripples with stone fruit and bright acidity.

Charmes is the largest of the Premier Crus, sitting right across the border from Puligny-Montrachet’s Combettes and Referts vineyards. Jobard’s Charmes is his Goldilocks wine– broader than the Blagny, but a bit lighter on its feet than the Porusot and Genevrières.

Porusot sits further north along Meursault’s mid-slope, with a slightly steeper aspect, leading to greater sun exposure and the most powerful and full-bodied expression in Jobard’s lineup.

Finally, the Meursault Genevrières is becoming Jobard’s icon wine. Nestled between Porusot and Charmes, Genevrières is full-bodied yet precise, with impressively layered notes of gunflint, hazelnuts, yellow apple, and herbal juniper note that gives the plot its name.

Jobard’s wines are at their best with age, so don’t neglect the back vintage offerings. The generous 2015, ‘16, and ‘18 vintages are all just reaching their peak, while the 2019, ‘20, and ‘21 could be drunk now, or laid down for additional layers of nuance.
