Collection: The Wizard of Chambolle: J.F. Mugnier

If there were a contest for the most perfect red Burgundy wines, those of J.F. Mugnier would be near the top of many people's lists. The glistening surfaces, silky textures and outstanding purity of these wines evoke comparisons with jewels rather than with the usual medley of fruits and vegetables. And rightfully so: Mugnier's wines are among the indelible experiences of drinking red Burgundy.

The village Chambolle-Musigny is not, funnily enough, the place to start; that belongs to the monopole Nuits St. Georges Premier Cru Maréchale, a walled landmark on the road just south of the town. The terroir here lacks the grandeur of Chambolle, but the winemaking elevates; these are wines of rare finesse and charm. The Chambolle village is a step up in lacy definition and aromatic beauty. Above that is rarefied territory; the sublime Amoureuses, and the immortal Musigny itself, a small two-acre plot that is the source of one of the region's greatest vinous experiences.
