Collection: The Uncompromising Wines of Bruno Giacosa

The late Bruno Giacosa has rightfully earned his spot on the podium of Italian winemakers as one of the most prominent producers in Piedmont and beyond. His 8-decade career started humbly at his family’s negoce operation in Barbaresco, where the young Bruno showed an early obsession for sourcing grapes from the best sites, which his father’s company would supply to local winemakers.

Against his father’s will, Bruno Giacosa started bottling his own wine in the early 1960’s. He doubled down on his taste for vineyard-specific wines by producing the first ever single-vineyard Barbaresco in 1964 from a parcel called Vigna Santo Stefano, a legendary bottling from vineyards later cultivated by Castello di Neive. Angelo Gaja, who is often credited with the invention of the Barbaresco Crus, would not produce a single-vineyard bottling until a few years later.

It is not until the 1980’s that the Giacosa family finally bought some land of their own in Barbaresco (Neive, where the winery is still located) and then in Barolo. The rest is history.

Today, the estate is led by Bruno’s daughter Bruna Giacosa, and the release of Giacosa’s domaine wines constitutes a real event. The inclusion – or not – of a Barolo Vigna Le Rocche Riserva bottling, with its immediately recognizable red label, serves as a barometer while assessing the overall quality of a Piedmont vintage.
