Collection: Paul Pernot’s Finely-Chiseled 2021s

Paul Pernot, who founded the eponymous legendary Puligny-Montrachet domaine in 1955, may very well be the vigneron with the greatest longevity in the Burgundy vineyards. He spent more than 6 decades at his estate's helm, later joined by his sons and grandchildren. As operations at the domaine are now run by the third and fourth generations, this remarkable familial continuity has certainly helped maintain Paul Pernot’s well-earned hallmarks of classicism and elegance.

The estate typically sells 80% of its crop to negociants, reserving the best holdings’ production – terroirs such as Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet and Bâtard-Montrachet, as well as esteemed Premier-Cru-level vineyards – for in-house bottling under the Paul Pernot et ses Fils label. The domaine has consistently delivered racy Puligny-Montrachets, with great fruit purity, mouth-watering freshness and the chalky undertones that bind it all together.

Sotheby’s Wine is delighted to offer a few wines from the 2021 vintage. Early April frost contributed to the challenge for most Côte de Beaune producers in this vintage, but those difficulties only seem to have perfectly suited the Pernot lean, clean style.

If the Villages wine, bright and fragrant, offers immediate charm, the Clos de la Garenne and the Folatières show a complex, captivating restraint that will be rewarded with a few years of bottle age. As for the Grand Cru wines, crown jewels of the estate, they sure are gems for the cellar. It is hard to resist the more forward Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet right now but the denser, richer Bâtard-Montrachet is a powerhouse built for the ages, to enjoy in a decade or three!
