Collection: Our Fall Selections

Following up on last week’s tasting at the store featuring autumnal red wines from around the world, Sotheby’s Wine is delighted to present an expanded selection of wines perfectly suited to the season. As the leaves are turning, our palates are suddenly craving bold wines that bring people together, around a candlelit dining table or by the fireside. This curated selection captures that spirit with warmth and depth.

Among the tasting’s standouts were the contrasting expressions of Syrah by René Rostaing and Penfolds. The Côte-Rôtie’s herbaceous, savory notes echoed St. Henri Shiraz’s feel of menthol and eucalyptus, with the latter showing youthful color and grip in spite of its 15 years of bottle age. The Clos des Papes 2020 displayed classic notes of kirsch and a warm, palate-coating finish, while López de Heredia’s Rioja Vina Tondonia 2009 – right in its optimal drinking window – unfolded with aromas of plum and fresh tobacco, framed by velvety tannins. Almaviva, a high-profile partnership between Concha y Toro and Baron Philippe de Rothschild in Puente Alto (Chile), closed the line-up with panache. Its unique, Carmenère-strong Bordeaux blend offered richness, structure, and concentrated blackcurrant fruit.

Our current selection is further elevated with blue-chip Bordeaux, most notably from Château Lafite Rothschild (a must-cellar 2020), Château Latour (a perfect 2009, in a coming-of-age moment) and the wonderful Vieux Château Certan 2019 (the wine of the vintage for many).

Looking ahead to the much-anticipated release of Masseto 2022, we’re pleased to offer the outstanding Massetino 2021—a compelling preview from this iconic Tuscan estate. And from Piedmont, Giacomo Conterno’s Barolo ‘Cerretta’ 2011 dazzles with its deep bouquet of withering roses and raspberry liqueur, proving an ideal companion for fall’s heartier fare.
