Collection: Margaux: A Range of Châteaux on Top Form

Château Margaux is the only First Growth that takes the name of its appellation. Among other reasons, perhaps that is why this great property dominates the mental horizons of so many of us when we think about Margaux. This is a big and varied appellation that, in the past, has suffered due to its reputation for variability.

Today, however, irrespective of vintage, a clutch of properties are making consistently silky, aromatic, elegant wines that embody the virtues of this part of Bordeaux.

Near Ch. Margaux itself lie the much-improved Malescot-St-Exupéry, Rauzan-Ségla and Brane-Cantenac. Of these, Rauzan tends towards a touch more richness and velvety generosity; Brane towards purity and precision of glorious Cabernet fruit. Malescot is a juicy, vibrant style with a lovely texture: winners all.

Slightly further south is the walled clos of Ch. d'Issan, a property I enjoy for its well-priced, early-drinking, classically perfumed Margaux. And at the southern point of the appellation, Giscours has long been an insider's wine; this large property produces wines of great aromatic class and suave texture, especially in the last decade, all for very reasonable prices.
