Collection: Birthday Bottles for the Fourth

America's big birthday will soon be upon us, and we're all going to need some appropriate bottles at hand. Our domestic inventory is extensive and majors on the most characterful and expressive wines the US produces. Starting with Cabernet, we have no fewer than six vintages of Ridge's great Montebello, perched high above Silicon Valley. Further north, how about a vertical of the great Spottswoode Cabernet, including every vintage from 1984 to 1991? We have it.

Remaining in the 1980s, the Mondavi Reserve is an understated gem of a wine, close to the hearts of so many American wine lovers. From more recent times, we have good stock of two Napa legends: Dalla Valle and Dominus, and even a handful of bottles of Screaming Eagle and Sloan.

America never stands still, and that includes wine styles. The country's best Chardonnays are no longer rich and soft. Quite the opposite, in fact: try Walter Scott's reductive Chardonnays from the Eola-Amity Hills along with Ceritas from the Sonoma Coast and Sandhi's focused Santa Rita Hills expressions for a fascinating study of the chiselled face of domestic Chardonnay. White or red, whatever you choose, raise a glass to our country's wonderful wine this holiday.
