Venture into Volnay: Lafon, Lafarge, d’Angerville and More

Tom Baxter |
Some of the most convincing reds of the Côte de Beaune are to be found in Volnay. Just a stone’s throw from the distinguished Pommard and the commercial hub that is Beaune itself, those in the know hold the great Volnay Premiers Crus of CailleretsClos des ChênesTaille Pieds and Champans in high esteem. But it doesn’t end there! Despite having no Grand Cru to call its own, there is quality to be found throughout this fine commune, up and down the Burgundian hierarchy.

Our curated offering highlights some of Volnay’s indispensable references. Henri Boillot constitutes such a dependable source of bright, generous red Burgundy. Elsewhere, Volnay Champans from Marquis d’Angerville is a true stalwart: the largest owner of this trusted site, it offers archetypal Volnay delicacy. At the more traditional end of the spectrum are the beautifully honest wines of Lafarge, with their acclaimed Clos des Chênes offering impressive refinement and staying power. Lastly, watch the famed Dominique Lafon’s hand turn to the great sites of Santenots du Milieu and Champans, or to Lurets through his eponymous négociant arm.

The Sotheby’s Wine selection has the considerable depth and breadth to allow for a true deep-dive into the serious red Burgundy beacon that is Volnay.
