Beloved by Burgundy drinkers the world over, the wines of Chambolle-Musigny are famous for their unsurpassed elegance, delicacy, refinement, and spice. Only Vosne and Volnay can compete when it comes to their highly scented perfumes and bouquets of heady, enchanting aromas. Yet ask any serious collector to name their most exquisite and memorable of these experiences and we’re confident one vineyard will echo in common refrain: Musigny – the crown jewel of Chambolle, and for many, the epitome of what Burgundy itself has to offer.
Musigny has been highly prized since the Middle Ages, and it's no wonder, given just how magnificent the best examples can be. The universally celebrated site was so revered it became the chosen namesake appended to the village of Chambolle in 1878.
But what makes the rare Musigny Grand Cru such treasured grail amongst its seekers
Perhaps it’s the way Musigny epitomizes what the finest Burgundies manage to offer us – a deliverance of power without weight, all wrapped in an inimitable package of harmony and grace.
The vineyard itself measures just under 11 ha in total, with the lion’s share owned by the venerable Comte Georges de Vogüé, followed by a scant 1.13 ha in the sage hands of Jacques-Fréderic Mugnier. Nine other owners share the minuscule remains, each working with less than a mere hectare, a painful scarcity considering several do not possess enough Musigny to make even one barrel of this vinous nectar.
Described by Mugnier himself as “a wine more spirit than body and flesh,” the ephemeral quality of Musigny often evades precise and technical definition. While elusive in nature to both its growers and collectors alike, there is one truth on which all can agree:
A great Musigny is an unparalleled experience.
