The 1855 classification of Bordeaux’s left bank properties has its critics, but few disagree with the final assessment that there are five châteaux that stand above the rest. The First Growths offer a degree of elegance, complexity and sheer beauty that other Left Bank wines can rarely achieve.
Great wines have great personalities, and each First Growth has a unique identity. Lafite is a wine of scent and finesse, while neighbouring Mouton is flamboyant and spicy. Latour is brooding and dense, and Margaux ethereal and perfumed. Haut-Brion – still far too often overlooked – is velvety and seductive.
