Bonnes Mares is one of those Grands Crus that is a very familiar name but which eludes easy description when it comes to the style of the wine. 90% of the vineyard is in the northern part of Chambolle-Musigny, while the rest runs up to the wall of Clos de Tart, in the center of the village of Morey-St-Denis.
The style does not obviously resemble any neighboring vineyards; certainly not Musigny to the south; Bonnes Mares is always darker and more brooding, perhaps a bit more mysterious. The best examples combine a Chambolle lusciousness of fruit and texture with a Morey firmness and earthiness.
The biggest landowner here is de Vogüé; under new winemaker Jean Lupatelli, the 2022 is sensual and perfumed. Henri Boillot and Fourrier's versions emphasize aromatic depth and a pliant texture. Arlaud and Roumier make two very classic, complete examples, of structure and richness. Finally, we have an aged treat in the form of a solitary bottle from the 1999 vintage, by Vincent Girardin.
