Sensational Chassagne from Ramonet

Nick Jackson MW |
Jean-Claude Ramonet is the leading producer of white wines in the village of Chassagne-Montrachet. His family is fortunate to own parcels in many of the village's top Premiers Crus, along with small parts of four of the Montrachet Grands Crus. Somehow, Ramonet is often overlooked in discussions of the greatest producers of white Burgundy; this is an obvious mistake, due perhaps to the domaine not residing in the more famous villages of Meursault or Puligny-Montrachet.

The whites are typical of Chassagne: concentrated, substantial styles, packed with fruit around a core of dry minerality. They generally need a little air (Ramonet is a prime candidate for decanting a white), and with that, they open gloriously, unveiling huge depths and aromatic complexity. The Ruchottes may be the pick of the Premiers Crus.

Ramonet is also renowned as one of the best producers of red wines in the traditional white wine villages of the Côte de Beaune, especially the outstanding Chassagne Boudriotte Rouge. Whatever you go for, know that the concentration means the wines improve with age; up to six years for a village wine and ten for a Premier Cru seems about right.
