Rousset-Martin: A Bridge Between Burgundy and the Jura

Walden Pemantle |
If there is any trend we advise our Burgundy lovers to watch, it is the migration of new talent from the Côtes d’Or to the Jura. A Burgundy native trained in Dijon, François Rousset-Martin took charge of his great-grandfather’s estate in Château-Chalon in 2007. There, he farms six hectares of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Savagnin, making wines of outstanding elegance that recall Burgundy as it was before the recent era of warm vintages.

The Chardonnay Beaumont comes from a 65-year-old plot of grey marl formerly made in Château Chalon’s traditional oxidative style. In Rousset-Martin’s hands, it brims with notes of flint and just-ripe orchard fruit.

Rousset-Martin’s Pinot Noir 909 is an homage to the year Jurassic monks first left the region to settle in Burgundy. It shows a heady bouquet both floral and earthy over ripe berry fruit and fine tannins.

A final wine of note, the Vieux Macvin is produced only in top years by blending unfermented Chardonnay and Savignin with brandy and barrel aging for at least five years – an iconic specialty of the Jura.
