Egon Müller 2022s: Age-worthy and Refreshing

Dear Collectors,

What better way to usher in the spring weather than with a selection of Egon Müller’s 2022s! Müller and his Scharzhofberger Riesling inhabit a tier of their own in the Mosel. What makes the Scharzhofberg vineyard so special, beyond the back-breaking south-facing slope, is its unique weathered slate. Blue and red slates are common across the Mosel, but the old, decomposing slate in Scharzhofberg allows vines to root particularly deeply, meaning balance and elegance even in warm years like 2022.

Beyond Scharzhofberg, Müller’s Braune Kupp vineyard faithfully translates the piquant, savory notions of its iron-rich soils into the glass. Always a dazzling value, it showcases Müller’s talent with a more open-knit, approachable structure than Scharzhofberg.

In 2022, the outlook for the vintage in Mosel was sunny with a caveat. The classic Mosel style is built upon cool weather, delivering just-ripe berries that match Riesling’s jasmine and honeycomb notes with acidity that makes these wines so age-worthy and refreshing. A cool, wet September tempered the warm summer, leading to a classic vintage that favored the Kabinett styles. Less Spatlese and Auslese were made in general, however, Müller delivered on both counts, bottling perhaps the Spatlese of the vintage and a tiny amount of incredibly crystalline, balanced Auslese.
