Dal Forno Romano: Valpolicella’s Modern Benchmark

Walden Pemantle |
No winery writes its own history quite like Dal Forno Romano. Dal Forno’s lavish, meditative wines have had such an influence on his neighbors that it’s easy to forget his first vintage was just 40 some years ago in 1983.  Since then, the reputation of his wines has rearranged Valpolicella’s established order. Dal Forno’s approach spares no expense, using meticulous sorting and top-of-the-craft barriques to chisel masterful layers of detail across the massive frame of his Amarone.

Today, we are excited to offer a string of vintages that trace Dal Forno’s modern history. 2013, possibly the vintage of the decade, earns praise for its relative precision and finesse. 2015 saw a triumphant comeback after poor weather in ’14 led the family to declassify their entire Amarone production. Finally, 2017, a year in which hail destroyed nearly 50% of the family’s crop, nevertheless yielded a tiny quantity of miraculously good Amarone.
