In 2011, the Dillon family of Haut-Brion purchased Château Tetre Daugay in St. Emilion, immediately renaming it Château Quintus. The property, now one of St. Emilion's largest, occupies a prime position at the top of the slope and with vineyards extending onto the plateau below the village. The limestone terroir gives a chalky texture and precision to the wines, allied to the succulence from the Merlot that comprises the majority of the blend.
The wines are classic St. Emilion in the best sense: juicy and sumptuous while also displaying minerality and freshness. They do not need too long in bottle before showing well, as the charming 2017 vintage amply displays. The 2018, meanwhile, possesses a deep, fruity core thanks to the warmth of the vintage, while 2020 offers outstanding balance and complexity. If you are a Bordeaux lover not yet familiar with Quintus, consider this your invitation.
