A Burgundy Legend: Domaine Lafon

Nick Jackson MW |
Dominique Lafon is one of the giants of the modern history of Burgundy, having produced some of the most compelling wines in the region in the past 30 years. Domaine Lafon is now in the hands of the next generation, and Dominique's commitment to quality is an enviable legacy for the family.

From the noble house and winery in the heart of Meursault, the domaine produces reds and whites largely from the villages of Meursault and Volnay. The whites combine the supple fruit of Meursault with an energy and tension sometimes missing from the wines of this village. The Volnay reds are classical in all the best ways: highly perfumed, with firm structures and great finesse. Do not sleep on the négociant wines under the Dominique Lafon label either; these are good sources of well-priced Côte de Beaune, accessible relatively young.

Among the vintages available, a word in favour of 2020. This is a vintage that grows in stature with every bottle tasted: in both colours, the wines show a wonderful balance of concentration and brightness, richness and finesse.
