Sotheby’s Champagne Day Selection

Wine Team New York |

The 4th Friday of October has been marked as World Champagne Day since 2009. At Sotheby’s Wine, we are always eager to celebrate. In honor of this particular occasion, we have selected an assortment of Champagne representing the diversity and excellence of the region.

Beyond the bubbles, we love Champagne for its versatility – best enjoyed before, during, or after a meal, in both victory and defeat, as Napoleon once said. At its best, Champagne is as expressive of terroir as any Burgundy, while also showcasing the careful hand of its winemaker. In that spirit, we offer both the iconic single vineyard expressions of Champagne and masterpieces of the blend.

Among our single cru offerings, Savart’s old vine Blanc de Noirs, Les Noues, dazzles with delicate red berry fruit and broad toasty aromas. In the Côte des Blancs, Salon’s iconic Le Mesnil channels Chardonnay at its purest: bracingly mineral with stupendous length and aging potential.

Elsewhere, Krug’s prowess with blending and base wines is on full display, with three editions of Grande Cuvée and a rare selection of vintage wines. For those in search of Champagne at its most decadent and richly textured, any search should begin with Krug.

Among the most unique and iconic producers in Champagne, Anselme Selosse and his protégée Jérôme Prévost are both masters of drawing out Champagne’s breadth and complexity. Their wines are expansive and profoundly complex, balancing fresh citrus peel and sea spray with a long, nutty finish.

Finally, for those seeking the comfort of a bottle that overdelivers at any price, Pol Roger’s Brut Réserve and our very own Sotheby’s Blanc de Blancs, exclusively sourced from Grand Cru vineyards, are remarkably satisfying entries into Champagne. Seek out Pol Roger for a Pinot-driven blend with nuanced aromas of toasted brioche, lemon curd, and raspberry, or the Blanc de Blancs for its bright minerality.

So, whether you are a seasoned collector or just beginning to explore Champagne, join us this week to celebrate one of the world’s great wines.
