Bastille Day: Celebrate with Exemplars of French Wine

Wine Team New York |
Every July 14th, the French celebrate their grand national holiday – Bastille Day. Commemorating a watershed moment in the French Revolution and the end of the ancien régime, it’s a jubilant day of street parties, fireworks, military parades, and countless waving tricolor flags.

In honor of Bastille DaySotheby’s Wine has curated a selection of exquisite wines that exemplify timeless French styles, including iconic cuvées from BordeauxBurgundyChampagne and more.

Among the collectibles, there’s Château d’Yquem: arguably the world’s most famous sweet wine, this is a virtually ageless, marvelously rich product of noble rot from the clay and gravel vineyards of Sauternes.

Champagne doesn’t get more quintessential than Dom Pérignon. The 2013 is a must-buy: a late-harvest vintage of powerful concentration, this blends crushed chalk delicacy, vivid citrus acidity, and a creamy texture.

For lovers of BordeauxDomaine de Chevalier’s L’Esprit de Chevalier is a perfect introduction to the Left Bank, while the 1995 vintage from Château Léoville-Las Cases – opulently ripe and beautifully well-knit – shows why it’s a crown jewel of Saint-Julien.

Château Sainte Roseline’s elegant, peachy Le Cloître Rosé is a tribute to Provence, home of some of the world’s great pink wines. Elsewhere, a bottle of Henri Boillot Bourgogne Blanc is a white Burgundy every cellar needs if classic French cooking is on the menu.
