Our Year in Review: The Top French Wines

Nick Jackson MW |

Small surprise that we sell more wine from France than from any other country. Reviewing our numbers this year, the best-selling French wines are not all household names, however. In Champagne, for example, the brilliant small grower Frederic Savart's Ouverture proved very popular, although Roederer's Collection and Pol Roger's classic Brut Réserve were also chart-toppers.

In white, the success of Bailly-Reverdy's Sancerre, Blanc de Lynch Bages from Bordeaux and William Fevre's Vaulourent Premier Cru from Chablis testify to the good taste of our customers. Staying in Burgundy and moving to the reds, it's no surprise to see the well-priced village wines of Coquard-Loison-Fleurot (Vosne) and Duroché (Gevrey) prove popular, as well as a lovely Premier Cru Volnay from the Hospices de Beaune in the excellent 2022 vintage.

There are many entries from Bordeaux, naturally. Illustrious wines like Pavillon Rouge 2018 and Mouton Rothschild 2017 have drawn buyers at attractive prices. Sister properties Canon and Rauzan-Ségla sustain demand with a combination of brilliant quality and fair pricing in the 2020 vintage. And finally, a word for Figeac 2020, a sensational wine that embodies all the recent improvements at this top-performing château.
