The fifth generation of his family to work vineyards in \u003cstrong\u003eBarbaresco\u003c\/strong\u003e, he now not only produces \u003cstrong\u003eBarolo\u003c\/strong\u003e, but also has a new winery in \u003cstrong\u003eCastiglione Falletto\u003c\/strong\u003e.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eTo say \u003cstrong\u003eRoagna’s\u003c\/strong\u003e methods are ‘traditionalist’ only tells half the story. He practises extended macerations. That might often mean 45-60 days in \u003cstrong\u003ePiedmont\u003c\/strong\u003e. But for Luca, this means 60-90 days. What follows is another unusually long period, this time for aging, either in \u003cstrong\u003eFrench oak\u003c\/strong\u003e with very thick staves or, for their rare \u003cstrong\u003eRiserva\u003c\/strong\u003e \u003cstrong\u003ewines\u003c\/strong\u003e, in ceramic. Either type of vessel targets minimal oxygen ingress and the preservation of fruit expression, while the tannins soften.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe wines show huge depth of fruit and powerful structure, but given the extended macerations and aging, the tannins are always beautifully crafted and integrated. The purity and the detail of fruit is particularly brilliant in wines that have been aged for so long (2-10 years or up to 15 for \u003cstrong\u003eRiserva\u003c\/strong\u003e level).\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe heart of the estate is the \u003cstrong\u003ePajè\u003c\/strong\u003e \u003cstrong\u003evineyard\u003c\/strong\u003e in \u003cstrong\u003eBarbaresco\u003c\/strong\u003e, from where comes the \u003cstrong\u003ePajè\u003c\/strong\u003e, \u003cstrong\u003eVV\u003c\/strong\u003e and the tiny-production \u003cstrong\u003eCrichët\u003c\/strong\u003e, from the top part of the site. From elsewhere in \u003cstrong\u003eBarbaresco\u003c\/strong\u003e, \u003cstrong\u003eRoagna\u003c\/strong\u003e bottles some of the top crus: \u003cstrong\u003eAlbesani\u003c\/strong\u003e (which incorporates the famous \u003cstrong\u003eSanto Stefano\u003c\/strong\u003e), \u003cstrong\u003eGallina\u003c\/strong\u003e (juicy and accessible) and \u003cstrong\u003eMontefico\u003c\/strong\u003e (powerful and classic).
