The Drouhin story is one filled with remarkable achievements. Following its inception by Joseph Drouhin in 1880, much of its modern reputation was built by Maurice Drouhin in the early 20th century. Aside from gradually assembling an enviable roll call of vineyard plots, Maurice became a prominent figure in the region and also rose to take up a significant share of the distribution rights for Domaine de la Romanée-Conti.
Fast forward to the present day and Maurice’s nephew Robert still oversees much of the operation, with the management and technical direction split between his children Frédéric, Véronique, Laurent and Philippe. The wine style today retains a certain classicism, but also an elegance and transparency of various biodynamically-farmed terroirs. The sheer diversity of sites vinified by Drouhin is nothing short of impressive.
The Sotheby’s Wine selection looks to capture as far as possible this breadth of the Drouhin range. Undeniable highlights include the flagship Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Mouches in both white and red, charming Chambolle village and 1er Cru and two vintages of Chambertin Clos de Bèze. Those seeking out more vinous treasures will likewise be tempted by the great Montrachet and Chassagne 1er Cru Morgeot that bear the Marquis de Laguiche name and here offer decades of bottle maturity to behold.
