An Exceptional Array of Jean-Louis Chave

Nick Jackson MW |

Few French domaines have as long a history as that of Jean-Louis Chave in the northern Rhône valley. The estate has been in family hands since 1481, and is now represented in its 16th generation by yet another Jean-Louis. The domaine’s signature wine is its magnificent Hermitage, undoubtedly the most consistent and complete of all wines from this noble hill. Chave’s Hermitage is rich but savoury, concentrated and dry, with a huge ageing potential. The white version is also among the finest on offer, with a richness, florality and freshness that only improve with bottle age.

The Hermitage wines are among France’s finest, and with prices to match. But the Chave family produces numerous other bottlings that will satisfy your craving for these pure examples of northern Rhône Syrah. The St. Joseph is dark, smoky and intense, and much more accessible when young than the Hermitage. The Farconnet selections come from purchased fruit and offer a budget-friendly introduction to the family style.
